Syncrete - an entity brought about by combining different elements or forms of belief

In a million years, will you be the same? Were you the same a million years ago?

On a dry, foreboding hillside, you look up to greet a sheer rock face. “It’s not that tall,” you think. Is it a natural formation? Contemplating basalt flows eroded by the river in the valley below or monstrous jackhammers sloughing off pillars of black stone, you take in the vast scene. Once there was gold here, but that was ages ago - depleted by your intrepid forbearers. The landscape, shaped by two centuries of human activity - a highway intertwined with the river’s ancient tracks, the talus overgrown with scrub grass and sage - seems to be holding the sky aloft, a defiant, syncretic panorama. The wind rises and you travel on, forever swept forward toward the edge.

I think the rock formation in this photo is very cool. I snapped it just outside Boise, Idaho in Lucky Peak State Park in the summer of 2023.
